Focus on Value for Money to Protect Public Funds – Auditor-General

The Auditor-General, Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has emphasized that the job of the external auditor is to ensure that the public funds are used for the intended purpose and also there’s value for money.

The Auditor-General said this when he launched the 2018 Audits with the theme “Accountability: A Shared Responsibility”. According to him, the purpose of the launch is to explain some of the things auditors do, what they are expected to do and what is expected of the entity under audit.

Giving his speech, he indicated that there is the need for internal auditors to gain some level of independence. This he said, will ensure that the Internal Auditor works according to set standards and work plan.

On the issue of payroll, he indicated that it is the responsibility of the Head of every entity to ensure that people who are on the payroll are all actual workers of the entity, quoting the financial administration  regulation 298, 299 and 300.

The Auditor-General advised, staff of entities that issues captured by auditors in their audit observations are confidential hence must not be discussed in the public.

He introduced a brochure titled Do’s and Don’ts of Audit which will be distributed in all the entities. The brochure has information and guides that entities are supposed to observe and follow whiles the audit is underway to help the auditors perform their duties with maximum independence.

Other speakers on the day included Mrs Janet Ampadu Fofie of the Public Services Commission who was the Chairperson for the event, Mr Agyenim Boateng Adjei – CEO, Public Procurement Authority, Dr Mohamed Saani Abdulai – Project Director, Public Financial Management Reform Project

Others were Mr Michael Owusu-Nimarko – Secretary to the Commission, Public Services Commission and Mrs Linda Ofori Kwafo – Executive Director, Ghana Integrity Initiative.
