The Audit Service’s unionized staff of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana took part in the Greater Accra Regional May Day parade held at the Independence Square, Accra.
Addressing the jubilant workers, the Greater Accra Minister, Mr. Ishmael Ashitey, deplored reports of abuse of workers’ rights by some employers. Such abuses include, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and burdening of workers in the private sector with indecent work, a situation he described as an affront to workers’ fundamental human rights.
Mr. Ashitey therefore, asked employers to respect the provisions in the country’s Labour laws and desist from frustrating their employees from forming or joining Trade unions.
In his address, delivered by the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the TUC, Ms. Freda Stephanie Frimpong, the Secretary General of the Union, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah appealed to the Government to end the Economic Recovery programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to enable the country take control over its natural resources for rapid economic development.
