Public Accounts Committee calls for special audit of National Sports Authority

Public Accounts Committee calls for special audit of National Sports Authority

The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC), Dr. James Klutse Avedzi has urged the Auditor General to initiate a special audit of the National Sports Authority due to rot within the organization.

This call for action arose during the PAC’s sitting on 5 February when the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi and Minister of Sports, Mr. Mustapha Ussif appeared before the committee to answer questions related to their institution after it was cited in the 2022 Auditor General's report.

The report highlighted financial irregularities at the National Sports Authorities in Cape Coast and Tamale, as well as the National Sports College in Winneba. These included unrecovered advances, unmerited taxes, uncollected rent, outstanding rent income, and declared bad debt.

Despite explanations provided by Prof Tsumasi, representing the Authority, the Committee Chairman, Dr. Avedzi expressed reservations and recommended a special audit by the Auditor General.

"Listening to what is happening here, I think the place is in a mess. There is a need for a special audit of the National Sports Authority," he said, emphasizing the need for integrity and accountability in sports management.
