Audit Service Equips GCTU SRC Audit Board to Promote Transparency in Student Governance

Audit Service Equips GCTU SRC Audit Board to Promote Transparency in Student Governance

The Audit Board of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has paid a learning visit to the Audit Service in Accra to improve transparency and fiscal discipline within student governance.

The delegation, led by the SRC Audit Board Chair, Charles Apasu Assor, formed part of efforts by the SRC Audit Board to deepen its understanding of public sector auditing standards and enhance the management of the Students’ Fund.

Deputy Auditor-General in charge of Commercial Audit Department, Mr. Samuel Nii Odartey Lamptey, in his welcome address, said the Service remains committed to equipping students with the practical knowledge that connects classroom learning with public sector oversight.

He advised the students to take the theoretical concepts learned in school seriously, as they would be required in practice during their professional work.

Mr. Charles Ahlijah, Assistant Auditor-General, Educational Institutions Department (Southern Zone) in a presentation, took the student delegation through the mandate of the Auditor-General under Article 187 of the 1992 Constitution, and the establishment of the Audit Service.

He also explained how the GCTU SRC Audit Board could also effectively exercise its mandate, as its work is backed by a constitution. He said the Audit Service’s role is to promote accountability and transparency in Ghana’s public financial management system.

He further took the Board through audit process, with emphasis on how financial reporting at the university level should align with the standards used in public institutions.

He encouraged the students to uphold integrity, objectivity, transparency, and accountability in their work, adding that practicing these values at the university level would prepare them for future roles in public service and national leadership.

He  advised them not to see their positions as small or insignificant since how they conduct themselves today could affect their future careers in government and public service.

Responding to these professional insights, Mr. Wisdom Quame  Makarios Dogbey, Vice Chair of the Board, on behalf of the delegation, thanked Management of the Service and said the Board was committed to applying the lessons and standards learned in its work for the student body.

Mr. Dogbey added that aligning the Board’s internal audit practices with Audit Service standards will strengthen transparency and accountability within the university’s student leadership.

The visit is expected to help boost internal control systems within the GCTU SRC, ensuring that every cedi of the Students’ Fund is properly used and accounted for.

Also present at the engagement were Madam Eugenia Shorme Nortey, Deputy Auditor-General in charge of Finance, Administration and Human Resource; Madam Stella Vinyo Dekey, Board Secretary; and Messrs. Emmanuel Abrefa-Kodom, Assistant Auditor-General, Administration and Human Resource, and Richard Boateng, Director of Accounts.
