Strengthening Evidence-Based Auditing: National Audit Office Delivers Technical Assistance to Audit Service

The Ghana Audit Service (GAS) has taken a significant step toward enhancing its performance audit capabilities through a targeted technical assistance training facilitated by the UK’s National Audit Office (NAO). The training, held in Accra, focused on equipping members of the Performance Audit Unit with advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis of audit evidence.

Opening the training session, Mr. Patrick Neequaye (Assistant Auditor-General, IS Audit Unit) highlighted the significance of the partnership between GAS and NAO, and how previous interventions have equipped colleagues in the Performance Audit Unit with techniques to adopt infographics in reporting and enhance their qualitative data analysis skills.

Also, he indicated that this initiative forms part of a broader collaboration between GAS and NAO aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, improving audit methodologies, and promoting evidence-based reporting. The training emphasized practical techniques for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to support robust audit findings and recommendations.

Participants explored a range of tools and approaches, including stakeholder interviews, survey design, statistical sampling, and data triangulation. The sessions also covered how to assess program effectiveness, identify systemic risks, and present audit conclusions in a clear and impactful manner.

The NAO team, led by Mr. Chris Groom, praised the enthusiasm and engagement of GAS staff, highlighting the importance of international peer learning in strengthening audit institutions globally.

Mr. Lawrence Ayagiba, Deputy Auditor-General, commended the NAO for its continued support, noting that the training aligns with GAS’s strategic goal of enhancing public sector accountability through high-quality performance audits.

Other facilitators from the NAO, Racheal Fenn, Annabelle Brown, and Helen Roberts, shared insights on various topics during the workshop.
